How to Distinguish Between Genuine and Imitation Quilted Fabrics

Examine the Stitching and Craftsmanship
Genuine quilted fabrics feature tight, uniform stitching that securely binds the multiple fabric layers and filling together, resulting in a solid, substantial feel. Imitations merely join the outer layer and lining loosely; they lack firm structural support when pressed and are prone to issues like shifting or clumping of the filling.

Assess Texture and Shape Retention
In genuine fabrics, the filling is securely anchored by the stitching, preventing localized clumping or hollow spots even after kneading, and the fabric maintains its smooth, flat shape through repeated washing. Imitations have loose internal filling that quickly becomes unevenly distributed upon handling, leading to wrinkling and deformation after just a few uses.

Test Durability
Genuine quilted fabrics feature robust stitching that withstands repeated pulling and friction without unraveling or tearing; they typically retain their integrity through more than 80 standard wash cycles. Imitations have shoddy stitching prone to skipped stitches from minor friction, and they often suffer from layer separation or pattern detachment after only a few washes.

Check Material Details
Genuine all-cotton quilted fabrics are breathable and gentle on the skin, preventing heat and sweat buildup. Imitations often use low-quality synthetic fiber fillings and may include a non-breathable film backing, causing a stifling, hot sensation during use and potentially emitting an unpleasant, pungent odor.
