Will Oxford Fabric Lose Its Shape During Machine Washing?

Jun 05, 2026 Leave a message

Standard machine washing generally does not cause deformation in ordinary Oxford fabric; however, improper handling or specific material types may carry a risk of losing shape.

Scenarios where deformation is unlikely
Coated Oxford fabrics (often used for bags) and Oxford fabrics blended with Lycra (elastane) feature a tight weave and excellent wrinkle resistance and shape retention. Most retain their original form after standard machine washing; some high-quality versions even maintain over 90% of their shape and elasticity after 50 wash cycles.

Scenarios where deformation is likely
Thin Oxford fabrics that have not undergone shape-stabilizing treatment, or items with complex, paneled constructions, are prone to distortion and loose stitching if washed in hot water or on aggressive drum-washing cycles involving heavy tumbling, or if subjected to forceful wringing or direct exposure to intense sunlight after washing.

Tips to prevent deformation
Check the product's care label before washing. Use cold water and a mild detergent, select a gentle wash cycle, and lay the item flat to air-dry in the shade; these steps can significantly reduce the likelihood of deformation.
