Can Oxford Fabric Be Machine Washed?

Jun 04, 2026 Leave a message

Most Oxford fabrics are machine-washable, but you should always check the product's care label for specific instructions. Hand washing is generally the safer option, as it helps prevent issues such as fabric deformation or damage to the coating.

When machine washing is suitable
Standard Oxford fabric garments and simple Oxford cloth bags can be machine washed using a mild detergent and cold or low-temperature water.

When machine washing is not recommended
Items such as zippered backpacks, Oxford products with complex structures, or Oxford curtains with special coatings are prone to issues like broken stitching, coating peeling, deformation, or fading when machine washed; hand washing or spot cleaning is recommended instead.

Precautions for machine washing
Soak the item for 20 minutes before washing, trim any loose threads, and remove any metal attachments that should not get wet. Ideally, use a traditional twin-tub washing machine rather than a front-loading drum machine, which can subject the fabric to harsh tumbling and impact.
Use a mild, neutral detergent and avoid bleach. Wash dark and light colors separately; adding a small amount of salt or white vinegar before washing can help prevent fading.
After washing, air-dry the item naturally in a cool, well-ventilated area. Avoid high-temperature exposure or direct sunlight, which can cause the fabric to stiffen or fade.
